I didn’t know that vehicle condition would make a difference in cost for a towing service. I would have thought for sure that weight would make a difference. I think it would be nice to know the factors just because then you can anticipate the cost.

A friend of mine was telling me that he was stranded on the road last night, and had to get someone to tow him. I think it’s a great idea to find out what make and year the truck is that will be towing your car. If I was in that situation, I would want to make sure that it isn’t a super old truck that would also require towing.

I always recommend doing your research on a tow truck company BEFORE you need them. Find one that fits the criteria you recommended in your post then save their number in your phone for if and when you need them. The stressful situation of needed a tow can mean hasty decisions are made and subpar towing companies are called.

Thanks for providing such details. A lot of people have a too simple understanding of how the cost work. There are many variables to take into account and I wish there was a way insurances could educate people more.

I agree with Charles’ comment above… our towing rates have nothing to do with the condition of the vehicle. We find out before we dispatch if the vehicle is towable or needs the flatbed.

You should never pay more than $100 for an in-town tow. Most towing company are honest and fair. But there are others that will try to take advantage of a person in a difficult spot.

It depends on the location to be honest. If you are in Boston, for example, the rates are much more expensive there since you are in a congested city and it can take some serious time to get to you, hookup the vehicle, and get it where it needs to go. Tow truck drivers are businessmen, and time is money for them. they may miss another potential customer while working on your car.

Also, consider what type of truck is towing your vehicle. A flatbed wrecker will eliminate any potential damage being done to your car, and so it may be worth it to you to pay the extra bit for the peace of mind, knowing that your car will not incur any further damage.
